On my first day of maternity leave I...
...set the alarm for a normal time (~9:15am), and actually got up when it off so that I had time to eat breakfast and check my email before heading out to Science Park, where I met with my two students for translation and discussion for about two hours. After lunch I then spent an hour packing up books in the office, sorting through things (I have so much paper...surely not all of it needs to be moved), printing off stuff so that hopefully I can get some work done from home the rest of the week. I packed up a few things and some empty boxes and toted them home, from where I headed out to the drugstore to get some of the few remaining things I need (failing on 3/4 things, grrr), plus a kilo of apples from the market. At home again, I spent an hour or so going through applications for the three PhD positions I'm on the search committee for, as the short-listing meetings for them are this Thursday. (Side note to anyone intending to apply for a job: You will significantly increase your chances of being short-listed if you actually follow the instructions. If we ask you for a cover letter, a research proposal, and a list of references, then failing to send us the first two and instead of the third sending use actual letters of reference will not put you very high on the list of candidates.) Oh, and I packed another box of books.
Hmmm, for some reason I thought that this was supposed to be a period of rest and relaxation! Maybe tomorrow...
