New Year's Eve in Amsterdam

Happy New Year, everyone!
The thing for New Year's Eve in Amsterdam is fireworks! They started being set off before we got out of bed this morning, and continued on all day - mostly during the day just the ones that just go 'bang'. Around 10pm the folks across the canal from us put on a lovely display (at around 100 ft. away from us, that's the closest I've ever been to fireworks being let off - real ones, that is, not just Roman candles and bottle rockets). But we were in for the real thing when midnight came around. For nearly 20 minutes in every direction there was bascially non-stop fireworks. Even now, 15 minutes after that, it's STILL way too loud to even think of going to sleep. It's the most fantastic display of fireworks I've ever seen; I think I've seen more tonight than I have in the rest of my life combined.
There appear to be basically no rules or anything about where/what you can let off here. We've seen Roman candles on street corners, fireworks that are clearly dropping all their flaming bits on top of roofs, and someone let off a whole chain of fireworks on the sidewalk right in front of our apartment buildng. There's been so many that down the streets near us is a permanent fog of war; you can't see down them more than a block or so. It sounds like a war out there, worse than the worst thunderstorm you've ever been in. It's really quite an amazing experience. With our floor to ceiling windows in the livingroom overlooking the canal, we've had a great view of it all.
Amazing.
