Friday evening we had a reception for the new master's student, and Brian (one of my officemates) and I were standing around surveying all of the bundles of untapped potential milling around, wondering which of us would be more likely to have any success -- could he convince one of them that what they really want to do research in is descriptive set theory, and could I convince one of them that what they really want to do is research in medieval logic? Of course, I thought Brian had a much better chance than me and he thought the opposite.

Turns out he was right! Today was the first meeting of the core logic course (mandatory for all new master's students) which I'm the grader for. And afterwards when we were fielding questions one of the students came up to Benedikt and said "Hi, I'm the guy who talked to you in April about doing some side project with medieval Latin..." and by this point I've got my hand in the air waving back and forth, "Ooh, me, me! Talk to me!" Turns out though he did mathematics as a undergrad he studied Greek and Latin on the side and had Latin in high school, and he'd like to do a reading/translation/formalization project with me. I win!
