Today was Joel's birthday, our fourth together and the first one he hasn't spent most of the day in bed ill! This made for a very pleasant day. We were going to make one of his famous cheesecakes to bring along to the office tomorrow to celebrate, but we found earlier this week that the regular grocery stores here don't appear to carry graham crackers. That's going to make making a graham cracker crust a tad difficult. There's a grocery store which specializes in English and American food and we'll try going out there, but we just didn't make it before the weekend, so no cheesecake tomorrow.

Instead, I picked up a box of cakemix, and made that. This was the first time following recipe instructions that my Dutch dictionary failed me, and putting the instructions into babelfish resulted in some amusing text about seizures. But boxed cake mixes really are designed to be idiot proof. You put everything together, you mix it (1 minute on low, 5 minutes on high, that part I did figure out), and you bake it. It turned out quite well, especially with a light vanilla/powdered sugar glaze on it, but it's unlike any cake I've ever had before - much closer in texture and consistency to a pound cake than your standard Betty Crocker cake-in-a-box.

We didn't do anything else much special, but there was an interesting movie on TV that we curled up and watched ("Voyage of the Damned", which had the pleasant property of turning out to have been based on real events), and we've still got some ice cream in the freezer we might dig out. Joel doesn't really go in for birthdays much, so all in all I think the day turned out quite nicely.
