Yesterday turned out to be really nice. Model theory was cancelled, and there was no logic tea, so after modal logic Joel went back to the office to do some work and I took the opportunity of a free afternoon to run errands. The place where I buy yarn is still out of the color I need one more skein of to finish my current afghan, but I got to the post office and the butcher shop, and, more importantly, to the grocery store for whipped cream, chocolate, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries (I was going to get just strawberries, but they didn't look the greatest, and the other three types of berries looked (and were) very scrumptuous), and to one of the flower stands in the Dappermarkt to buy Joel some flowers. I found some lovely yellow tulips with reddish oranges tops.
Widget's recent favorite game has been knocking over his water bowl. We used to keep a bowl in the hall in addition to the metal one in the kitchen, because Slinky doesn't seem to like drinking out of the metal one, but after he'd knocked it over once or twice a day each day for the last week, we moved it to the bathroom temporarily (otherwise, the water sits on the wood floor of the hall until we wake up and wipe it up). Which, of course, meant that he tore a hole in the cat litter bag, thus spreading litter all over the bathroom floor, and then dumped his water bowl over. So we had a nasty mess of wet cat litter gummed up underneath the mat outside the shower, and there were dirty little kitty paw prints on the counter in the bathroom and in the hall and the bedroom. I figured the easiest way to clean up the wet litter would be with the mop, and once I got the mop out, I figured I should just got ahead and do the entire house.
So I took advantage of the fact that Joel wasn't there to put on some of my CDs which I know he doesn't like as much, turned up my music loud, took everything except the large pieces of furniture off the floor, and swept and mopped everything. The cats of course had a thrilling time. It is just so much fun to chase the mop, or bat at it from underneath the couch, or run careening into the dust/cat fur/hair that has been just swept into a pile for transfer to the dustpan. And shaking out the rug meant a trip onto the porch, which is always a highlight of Widget's days.
It'd been a few months since we'd done a thorough mopping, which meant that you could really see (and feel!) the results when I was done, which was very gratifying. Even Joel commented on it after he got home, how nice it was to have clean floors.
Then in the evening we curled up together to eat berries, cream, and chocolate, and watch an episode of the Hairy Bikers' Cookbook. Golly I love British cooking shows. They are so weird. But both recipes they demod looked great, and we're planning to try them out.
Definitely a good way to spend Val-Day with my sweetie. And it's a first - this is the first year since we've started going out where he hasn't been sick on either his birthday or Val Day! (Our first Val Day, he crawled out of bed long enough to hand me a brown paper sack which had my gift in it. I don't think he even stuck around to watch me open it before heading back to bed!)
