So, tonight we decided to make varkenschnitzels met champignonsaus for supper. This is a recipe which we got out of the monthly magazine that our grocery store has, and so it's something we translated from Dutch. (Tangent: It's amazing how easy it is to translate recipes. Grammar is basically not required, and because there's a fairly narrow range of the types of things you do during cooking, vocab can usually be handled by a dictionary.) Being translated, it's of course not very specific; if there was a word we couldn't figure out, we usually just skip that section. We've made this recipe a few times before and never had any problems. But tonight we realized we must've missed translating the part which says "be sure to let the pan cool down a bit after taking the schnitzels out before you put the cognac in, otherwise the cognac will catch fire". You know, I've never actually seen someone with singed hair and eyelashes before. And he didn't even realize that he had singed his hair until I came running into the kitchen to make sure everything was all right, saw it, and got all goggly-eyed and started laughing. I got the camera and tried to get a good picture or two, but he went off to the bathroom and brushed off all the burnt hair before I could get a good shot.

Well! I never said that living with Joel was boring. :)
