May. 4th, 2006 09:24 pmThe header for the final section in the Arte fidei text I'm translating is "Nothing greater than perpetual torment is the punishment of the damned." What a cheerful note on which to end your text.
The translation is going apace - it's at times exhilirating (when it dawns on me that I'm seeing the same words over and over and hence am beginning to recognize them without having to look them up, when I get enough context translated that the meanings of some of the more idiomatic phrases pop out at me like a sore thumb, when I complete a section, even if it's one that consists of a heading and a statement "This follows from a previous proposition") and at times frustrating (when it dawns on me that I'm looking up the same word over and over, and still haven't put my finger on a meaning that makes sense, when I have identified all the grammar and the right meanings of each word in a sentence but cannot put them together in a way which makes sense, when I come across words I haven't yet been able to find in any dictionary, or for which the the meanings I've found just don't seem right (I doubt that there is any talk of leeks, going out to luncheon, or jaw-bones in this text - though I could be wrong).) But I'm still on track, I think, to have this substantially done by the end of June. I find I can only work on it for about 3-4 hours at a time, before I have to stop and take a break. But even so, I'm finding I can accomplish more and more in that three hours each time I attack this.
Overall, I've been enjoying this so much that when I'm finished with this, I'm going to tackle De propositionibus modalibus (which should be more straightforward as it is substantially shorter!). There's such a sense of accomplishment and contribution to be working on something which so far as I can tell, no one else has worked on before (by which I mean I don't know of any other English translations).
