last day!!!
Aug. 15th, 2008 09:42 amYesterday was probably the low point of my two weeks. Both Wednesday and Thursday I had a horrible time dragging myself out of bed, and I was so tired yesterday that suddenly at 4:30 I realized I'd forgotten to eat lunch, and that all I'd had that day was three Franzbrötchen and cup after cup of mint tea. Among the things that I did while being completely out of it was (a) write the date as "14 April", (b) pour water all over my hand instead of into a cup, and (c) fail many times to actual put forward a grammatical sentence.
Things got better in the evening when we went out to the lecturer's dinner, and I finally got some food into my system and woke up. We had a surprise planned for the dinner, Benedikt and I. At the conference dinner for ESMLS in June, a magician came and put on a fabulous show, and we decided then that we should engage him for one of our lecturer dinners. The show was definitely a hit. There's just something that appeals to people in our field about someone who is frankly trying to deceive you, and you know it and you still are deceived. For the final trick of the show he gets three volunteers to lend him their wedding bands, and this time when he took them he said, "Don't worry, you won't have to go back to your wife and explain why your wedding ring has disappeared", and Valentin joked "Because your wife will have disappeared too." :)
I got home after 11pm last night, but still managed to get some of my things packed up, so there isn't much that I have left to do once we have completed the cleaning of the ESSLLI site. And I know I was feeling much better today because I woke up a few minutes before my alarm was going to go off, and didn't have to struggle to actually get out of bed.
