Of course, it's all things that I was well within my rights to decline and I didn't, so this isn't really a complaint. It's more of a happy observation; I'm pleased that I am still able to contribute to the department workings even with a baby in tow.
Today Gwen and I spent about 6 hours out at the university; she slept through one skype interview (interviewee probably didn't even realize that there was four people there instead of the planned three, since the webcam only showed one face at a time), and then was awake during one seminar talk. I then missed about 20 minutes of the next talk because she was fussing while eating, which was a bit unfortunate because it was given by the second candidate, but then she dozed for about half an hour and was awake and content to sit on my lap all through the second interview.
And yes, sit! She's really getting very good at sitting upright now with only minimal support from me, just enough to keep her from losing her balance. This is a good thing, as Monday we had to go get more passport photos taken (tomorrow we go to den Bosch to apply for her residence permit, and since Dutch residence permits use different dimensions on their passport photos we couldn't re-use any of the ones we got for her US passport), and the place I went to here in Tilburg wasn't really set up to do babies. So I sat her down on the stool that big people sit on, crouched down low so that I wasn't visible, and held on to the back of her shirt. The photographer quick snapped six shots until she got one where she could see both of Gwen's ears and Gwen was looking right at the camera, and we were done. If she hadn't been able to sit so strongly by herself, I'm not sure what we would've done. But luckily it's way easier to get passport photos taken at 9.5 weeks than it is at 12 days.
