This trip to Canada has been a great success. Smooth, uneventful trip over (it was a three movie flight), the van from Toronto to London left early and so we got in around 11:00pm Wednesday night rather than closer to 11:45pm as scheduled, and I went straight to bed. The taxi was picking us up at 11:00 the next morning to take us to campus for lunch, so I set my alarm for 10:00, figuring I didn't really need breakfast. I ended up sleeping through it, and waking up around 10:45. It was heavenly. And a great way of combatting jet lag.

The workshop was lots of fun -- small enough to have good discussions after each of the talks, and during coffee breaks, etc. The organizers fed us extremely well, so there was also lunches and dinners to discuss things over. My talk was the last one on Saturday before lunch, so my audience was smaller, but it was still very well received and the comments I got were both interesting and helpful. After lunch Henrik took me to the Greyhound station and I caught a bus to Kitchener, where [livejournal.com profile] eliskimo picked me up and we've been converting ~10 years of online friendship into an in-person one. Lex is an absolute sweetheart (having a captive audience to read him books and listen to his stories has certainly helped win him over), and hanging out with him shows me what fun I have to look forward to with Gwen in a few years. And it's been a lot of fun to sit and hang out with someone that I can talk about both SCA stuff and mom stuff with. Even though I've been doing this mom-thing for almost a year, I still don't really feel it yet. Friday night, we repaired for drinks before dinner and the women congregated on one side of the table to talk about kids and things, and it was a bit weird being one of the two (out of four) women there who had a kid. I'm still not used to being in situations where my Momhood is something that can generate topics for conversation.

Today we had a lazy morning and then [livejournal.com profile] eliskimo, Lex, and I went to church (with beautiful stained glass windows with the sunlight pouring in, and a gorgeous organ). After lunch, we got in the car and just drove around, looking at the countryside, the farms, the scenery. It had been sort of grey and rainy the last few days, but sunny today, and with the fall leaves out it was just beautiful.

The rest of the afternoon we've spent hanging out on the couch, drinking tea and chatting. It's been absolutely lovely.

My fight tonight is around 11:00pm (really late!) so I don't get back to schiphol until around noon. I'll be glad to get home and see Joel and Gwen again...and then we turn around Tuesday morning and head to Heidelberg for a few days. Hopefully we'll come back with a rental apartment picked out. I hope!
