I can be a right idiot sometimes
Nov. 3rd, 2012 12:57 pmToday Gwen and I were supposed to be off to the Polderslot event, Maerlant's World. Things started off great: It just happened that the few times that Gwen fussed in the night, Joel got up and dealt with her before I could, so I didn't get out of bed once, and she slept until almost 7! After feeding and changing I packed our stuff, and we were on the way by 8:00. It was about 1.15 hours to the site, not too bad, figured we'd get in around 10:00. We got to the site -- a beautiful collection of buildings surrounded by water such that you have to cross a dock/pier in order to get to two of them! -- where there were remarkably few people wearing funny clothes (unless you count all the boy scout uniforms). Curious. Wandered around, checked out all the buildings, and then went to the event webpage (hurrah for it being an event in NL so I had internet on my phone) to get either Hannah or Bertrik's number and call them. And that's when I saw: "Site address...bla bla bla...Ommel..."
Wait, Ommel? But the message to the DW-L just a few days ago about the upcoming Polderslot event said 5 minutes from Delft Zuid, and I'd looked up the specific address. Checked the DW-L archives...oh, that post? It was about the event in February. Grrr.
So, yeah. Not very clever here. And trying to figure out how to get to the actual site led me to the realization that trying to fit in feeding (I had two bananas with me for Gwen, and she ate them on the train back from Delft, which meant I had no other food for her and lunch time was coming up), naptime (she'd napped for about half an hour on the way out, but I'd been counting on her getting a good nap in once we arrived on site), hauling all my stuff and the stroller in the rain with shoes that are not waterproof and via two busses that I weren't sure how late they'd be running on a Saturday night AND either a 2km or a 4km walk from the bus to the site, and then back again, in said rain and shoes with said stuff...I decided it just wasn't feasible. But then I had to get in touch with someone at the event in order to let them know and to make alternate arrangements for court and stuff.
Amazingly, the person I was able to get a hold of first was Margaret, and her first response was to offer to come pick me up. Driving, it's only about an hour. And Joel said he'd be willing for me to leave Gwen with him for the rest of the day, so hopefully in a bit she'll go down for a nice long afternoon nap and not be too much of a pest.
Not exactly the day I planned.
