Since I leave around noon tomorrow, we decided to celebrate Gwen's birthday today, by opening presents and having cupcakes. I thought we'd do presents in the morning and cupcakes in the afternoon, but Joel slept late, and then she joined him for breakfast, and then she had a meltdown that prompted me to put her down for a nap, rather earlier than planned, and as soon as I was sure she was asleep, I went out to do some errands, go to the grocery store, and buy her cupcakes. When I got back, she was awake, unfortunately having slept only half an hour.

I had picked up some crackers and pretzels, so we put together a bowlful to eat as a special snack while opening presents, and while Joel showered we inspected the loot:

and ate snacks:

She was quite excited to start opening things:

The first present was quite a hit:

glasses

I picked these up last weekend, in hopes that if she had her own pair, she'd stop asking for my glasses.

She got a book and a sippy cup in the shape of a duck from Aunt Andrea & Uncle Matt and the cousins, a wooden tool box from Oma and Opa, and from us in addition to the glasses a bottle of bubble solution (which I think might be her favorite), and the aforementioned cradle:

She seemed pretty excited by the cradle, immediately going to get her babies and lay them down.

Last week at daycare they said I could bring along a cake and some snack that Gwen likes, e.g., pretzels, on Monday for they were going to celebrate her birthday. I have no idea if people traditionally bake or buy cakes, but I bake cakes, so I made one today for Joel to bring on Monday. As I was measuring out the butter, Gwen saw it and asked for "butter, butter, butter!" (one of her favorite things -- right up there with cheese). I told her that she couldn't have just butter, and she replied with: "Tiny piece?" I had to laugh; I'm not sure she's ever heard that phrase before, and certainly she's never used it. But it was such an appropriate response to my comment! And so in keeping with her character.

We rounded the day off with cupcakes for the midafternoon snack. She approves of the butter cream frosting:

Unfortunately, due to that rather shortish nap, she's getting a bit fractious, but when Joel gets back from Bauhaus we'll give her a light supper, a long bath with bubbles, and put her to bed early.

And now, I need to get back to packing for Nepal and the US. It'll be ~30C in the former, and probably around 0C in the latter. Makes packing appropriate clothing interesting...
