blast from the past

Just yakked on the phone for over an hour with a college friend that I hadn't talked with in a couple of years before she IMed me out of the blue last January (while in the Dominican Republic at her brother's wedding!). That was just fantastic. She and I aren't really that good at keeping in touch -- I don' like to call people, she doesn't use email that much, but when we do get in contact, it's like it's been months since we last talked rather than years. I like friends like that. :) She's looking for an excuse to come to Europe (never been), and so once she figures out her summer schedule she wants to come visit us in July or August. Hooray!
My bread-making this weekend was rather hap-hazard as I spent most of the day getting a crash course in php in order to create a dynamic schedule for ESSLLI so that when changes are made to the programme I can just edit the database rather than all the various webpages. This was the first time I'd ever done anything with php; thank goodness Joel is extremely patient. But that took up most of my day so I didn't have time to set any bread going in the morning. For supper we made use of some of the leftover cabbage by making sweet and sour cabbage soup; we modified the recipe by doubling the amount of soy sauce and caraway seeds, and adding a tablespoon of vinegar. We used just green cabbage; I'd like to add some red cabbage next time, because then I'll have purple soup! Afterwards I was still somewhat hungry, so Joel managed to convince me to run to the store to pick up some cheddar to make a quick bread recipe for beer & cheese bread; we'd tried it on Friday night and it was very good though needed a bit of fixing too. So tonight I made it with 1/2 tsp less sugar and twice as much oregano and marjoram, and it turned out quite tasty. Not really something that will contribute to my "Forearms of Steel" weekend exercise routine (no kneeding OR raising), but it's easy and quick and tasty.
Yesterday I did something I've been meaning to do for the last year and a half: I took my pair of winter shoes where I'd worn off the heel of one to the little key cutting and shoe repair place next to our butcher shop; Joel wanted to make a spare set of keys for the building and the apartment so we've got something to give to guests, and something less bulky to carry while running, so I grabbed my shoes and figured it was worth seeing if they were fixable. This was the first time we'd been in this little shop, and it's the real thing -- they've got these HUGE metal shoe horn machines just behind their desk, things that have probably been in use for more than half a century. They had my shoes fixed by the time we'd finished the rest of our errands, and it was only ~€8 -- not that much more than it cost to get two keys cut! So I finally have shoes other than my red boots that I can wear in winter, hooray.
