My mom just got a phone call from her younger brother, my Uncle Rick, who has been battling aggressive cancer for the last 4 years (when he was diagnosed, no one with this type of cancer had ever made it more than a year. He's been blessed with access to the best doctors and specialists in the US). Yesterday they found the cancer has spread to his bowels. Today he's decided that's enough. He's leaving the hospital later today and expects that the end will come fairly soon.

I don't know what much more to write other than that at times like this I really hate being an ocean away from my family.

I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how hard it is to be so far from your family.

He sounds like a very brave soul and perhaps his 4 year struggle will inspire the next person to stretch that awesome achievement even further.

Oh yes, I know what that's like. My dad was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis when we were in the States. It was late November / early December and our flights back were via Frankfurt at the end of January. I tried to get the flights moved earlier, but the entire population of Germany visits Cape Town in summer (real summer, southern hemisphere summer :) and all flights to CT from Frankfurt were full. It was awful. I really feel for you.

Being even a third of a continent away (St. Louis to Washington, DC is ony 800 miles) can suck, too.
