linguistic notes
Jan. 22nd, 2014 04:38 pmI think I just heard Gwen say "I" (referring to herself) for the first time. Normally she uses "Gwen" or "Gwennie". But she climbed off the couch, knocking something off along the way, and then announced "I dumped it". Joel too doesn't remember her ever having used "I" before.
I believe I've also successfully taught her the concept of 'name'. A few days ago coming home we ran into our upstairs neighbors who own the semi-outdoor cat that we see many mornings. I told them how Gwen always looks for their cat, and they told us his name. She then became fascinated with calling for "name Kalli" instead of just "Kitty", so I thought I'd try to get her to understand what it meant for "Kalli" to be a name. As of this afternoon, if I ask her her name, daddy's name, my name, or either of our cats' names, she can identify them correctly (Gwennie, Daddy, Mommy, Slinky, Widget). I'm now trying to get her to learn "Gwendolyn Rose Uckelman". She'll take a good stab at "Gwendolyn Rose", but when I tell her her full name, she refuses to believe me. :)
