I've been on a C&I kick the last couple of days. I spent Friday and Saturday working on an assignment from the queen for Pennsic, and today I completed four scrolls. Two are being given out next weekend, so no photos yet, but the other two are backlogs.

The first is one I drew and painted in March, did half of the calligraphy in April, and finished the calligraphy and did the whitework today. The reason for the big gap (and also for the fact that I didn't do any C&I between early April and the end of May) was a fiasco with the calligraphy in the first installment; I ended up with sepia and vermillion bleeding together. It's amazing how much less frustrating something like that becomes when you leave it sit for three months and come back to it. You can hardly see the bleed, especially now that I went over some of it again. So I'm pretty happy with it:

Fleinn

The other is one that got assigned to me this morning, and so I feel very smug about the fact that I started and finished it today, the initial was one that I did for [livejournal.com profile] wortschmiedin, so that was done in advance. I like panaches; the badge is easy to draw:

Yup, I was doing up invitations for it! Which meant lots of copies of the same wording, so once I did one, the successive ones went a lot quicker.

I do like your architectural border! Both of the scrolls are beautiful!

I really need to get hold of more books on illumination to inspire me. After the backlog clearance project I have this fear that half of Drachenwald has one of my simple versals. :)

Any suggestions?

I hope to scan in the image on which I based the architectural one, because it's one where I feel that my version turned out better than the original! (The original is rather...sloppy...let's say).

I agree that books with colored pictures are great for finding inspiration. And Oxbow Books is a great place to procure them. But don't dis your versals! I think they're lovely and which I could do penwork like that.

I really do love both of them, especially the calligraphy. I think my favourite hand of the two is the second one.

Well done on both!

Thanks! Regarding the calligraphy in the second one, I forgot to discuss it in the original post. For a long time now I've been so jealous of [livejournal.com profile] bend_gules's beee-you-tee-ful calligraphy, and when I compare mine to hers its always disappointing. A few days ago I finally figured out how to fix this (don't know why I didn't think of this sooner): start copying some of her works! So the hand for Beatrice's scroll is based on the backlog panache/AoA that she posted to the dragonscribes blog recently. I still have a ways to go before mine looks as good as hers, but I'm definitely going to keep practicing this one.

Wow

I think that top one is the most beautiful I've seen you do yet! Keep up the good work!
