living in the future

I got a nice pair of headphones a few years ago for Christmas, and now out at the office I'm usually attached via them to my computer, so that I can listen to music. It's a bit of a pain because if I want to stand up and go get a book, I have to take them off (I would love to have a pair of wireless headphones, do they even exist?). But in general, the benefits far outweigh the inconveniences.
Unrelatedly, Joel gets to listen to me complain about cold hands on a regular basis. Two contexts where it's especially bad are at the office (when the heat isn't on (something that is often the case, and which we have no control over), my fingers can get blue sitting at the computer typing) and while traveling (I just don't have good enough gloves). This morning Joel gave me a present, which will help with both: UBS-powered heated fingerless gloves. I can plug them in to my computer while working at the office, and I can even plug them in to my laptop if I'm ever traveling and, e.g., sitting in a cold train station in Brussels for 45 minutes. (Though we don't know yet how quickly that will drain the battery on the laptop). They're awesome.
On the other hand, it does mean now that my hands are plugged in to my computer, in addition to my head. I'm feeling vaguely Borglike. This is what living in the future is like. This is just the first step towards being permanently plugged in to your electronics...
