So today is Joel's birthday and due to a number of factors -- baby who alternated sleeping for 30 minutes (if that!) with refusing to eat despite being hungry and wailing, incompetent Dutch rail system which is still running at subpar even though it stopped snowing Friday afternoon, wife who slept miserably last night -- there's basically nothing special happening today. Martijn and Wendy decided not to brave a packed sprinter and the possibility of further train delays tomorrow morning making Wendy late for work to come down for the weekend and watch the Superbowl tonight; Martijn is the conveyor of my birthday gift for Joel; I didn't get any birthday cake baked; we won't be going out to eat because now that Gwen is finally asleep I'm not doing anything to change this...so basically it's going to be a day just like any other.

Now, Joel is fine with this. He's not really into birthdays or celebrations. But I am, and it disappoints me, and I was feeling rather blue, and about an hour ago I complained to him, "You know what I really miss? Doing something fun." He laughed and said, yes, he misses fun too (note: We don't have a purely unfun life; I sacrifice a few precious hours of sleep each weekend so we can maintain our Saturday evening tradition of pizza and TV. We have only 3 episodes of Downton Abbey left. :(). And then he asked: What would be fun? "Watching a movie" and "going out to eat" were the only things that I could come up with, it's been so long since we've done something fun (note: not true. As I type this, I remember that two weeks ago we went to a beer festival in Gouda with Martijn and Wendy. That was lots of fun!). But then it occurred to me, maybe we could try out our fireplace for the first time!

fire!

Voila. I've pulled up the one upholstered chair we have (you can see it in all of its glory here; I think all things considered I'm glad I have only one of those in my livingroom) in front of the fire and am feeling a lot happier.

Parenthood often necessitates a redefinition of what it is to have "fun." Sometimes "fun" is getting to sleep for a total of eight hours in one night with only one interruption requiring you to get out of bed! Mmm. Makes me look forward to having some fun someday! ;)

But some time spent in front of a fire in a cozy chair (looking at the fire, not the chair) definitely would fit the bill!

Happy Birthday Joel!

We ended up both in the chair for a little over an hour looking at maps and routes and websites and planning our trip to the Scottish Highlands in May. That was definitely fun!
