Last night was, without hyperbole, the worst night we've had so far. Gwen woke up around 12:40 (way, way earlier than she has in a long time), Joel got up and fed her a bit, and then she lay and fussed for a good 50 minutes before I got up, replaced the pacifier, and she fell asleep a bit. After that, she woke up and fussed nearly every hour, and we alternated getting out of bed to stick the pacifier back in. She has never woken up that often at night.

We could tell that she was getting congested and thus that was probably contributing to the waking up, but this morning when I finally got her out of bed her left eye was all crusted over and fused shut, in addition to her left nostril being mostly plugged. A warm wash cloth helped with the former, and though her eye continues to be a bit weepy. Her eye isn't red so far as I can tell, but I'll be watching it, because I sure hope this isn't pinkeye. And of course, it's Friday morning again. Even if I wanted to take her to a doctor, I doubt I'd have any better luck than last time. So frustrating.

Hell, I've had Nights of Major Congestion: I can sympathize with both you and Gwen.

Eye gack: it may not be pink-eye that's causing the crustiness. Last month, I had the same, but it was a "normal" eye infection rather than conjunctivitis. The cure involved one drop in each eye three or four times a day; no pills, no bad-tasting liquids, just an eye drop several times a day. If that's of any help, which it may not be.

Luckily it's looking like it's just "there's so much sinus crud, it has to go somewhere"; I keep checking and her eyes themselves don't look infected, they're just somewhat crusty and weepy. *thank goodness*.

Don't you just love how illness only happens on weekends?

I'm reading this after a pretty awful night myself. I hope the next few nights have been better. And the eye thing--Bun Bun had a blocked tear duct early on. Hope that's all it was for your adorable little one. --Bunny

Looks like tonight will be night 5. I'm feeling pretty wrecked. She's doing OK during the day, but there's just so much sinus gook that the nose fills up and then the eyes fill up and crust over and then she can't breath and she spits out her pacifier and...

Luckily, she's still not running a fever or anything, so I know it's something that given enough time it will clear up.

Valerie had periods when she was very little when she had very gummy eyes. I doubt it is pinkeye. Since she has a cold, it is probably just part of that.

She probably won't like it, but you may want to try a saline solution for her nose. Since it is just a bit of salt, it is safe to use on babies her age. It should help clear out some of that gunk in her nose and perhaps she could make it 2 hours between waking.

Things are on the upswing (she didn't wake up until about 2:45 this morning, and what with a small bottle only took about half an hour to go back to sleep instead of an hour, and then slept through until 6:40), but the congestion is still pretty bad.

So, what exactly does one do with saline solution and noses? Squirt it up with an eyedropper? I haven't a clue.

Most saline solutions I've gotten are made for stuffy noses and come with a dropper top. You can either hold it upright to her nose and squeeze to get a spray (which may be a bit disconcerting for her) or while she is laying down, put a drop or two in each nostril so it can work its way up into the nose and sinuses.
