Parents arrived Thursday evening, left this morning. It was wonderful to have them here, but marred by the fact that Gwen started getting sick Thursday night, and still is (though much better). This means not only did they not get to see her normal sunny happy chatty self except in glimpses, she's had disrupted naps (crying and refusing to settle for two hours yesterday, very unusual) and woke up sometimes multiple times during the night, so I'm beat, not to mention Joel is still sick from Crown 2.5 weeks ago, and I started getting sick Sunday.

We went to Groningen for the weekend to a beer festival on Saturday and then Martijn's mom and step-dad had us over for a traditional Dutch meal. It was awesome. Way more fun than a restaurant. Anneke gave Gwen some books:

books

In the last few weeks she's started really, really loving books.

I've been curious about baby-led weaning (it seems like such a natural, obvious idea) but am nervous about choking. After some discussions with a few people I realized that if the pieces are large enough, since she can't bite, only gum, she's not going to be able to choke on the large piece or get off small enough pieces to choke on. So today I put her in the high chair and gave her a piece of bread and a slice of red pepper. Both received lots of nomming. She liked the crusts of the bread the best; easiest to hold on to, and hold their shape enough to nom on. I've got some pictures, but the camera is downstairs and I'm simply too tired to go and get it.

ETA: Now, with pictures:

bread

There's more but I can't think of it right now.

It's a pity that the position of HRH Drachenwald doesn't come with a trained staff of retainers, nannies, household help, and the like....

Not familiar with the term, but a quick look, and this is very much how our babies eat - and the further down the line they are, the more we run this way! (We had more time with Owen to prep food just for him, but Rinnah as the fourth has to eat the food that's there!)

Yes, she's 10 months old, but with her delay in fine motor she hasn't been handling toys as fluently as other kids have by this age. Today at lunch she finished with 1/8 of an apple, and then tonight had a great time gnawing away at a 3" stalk of celery. She loves it!

So glad Gwen is on the mend! Bummer about timing with Mom and Dad's visit, but I'm certain that they enjoyed seeing her regardless of her state of mind. ;)

Yeah, I think the term is new but the concept old. I'm going to keep feeding her purees and mashes and stuff (which I guess you wouldn't do at all on strict BLW), but sometimes it's just easiest to put her in the high chair and hand her something to nom on. Though it will certainly take awhile before she ingests enough from that to actually nourish herself!

Sorry for Gwen being sick.

My baby is also dealing with cold & cough, and I know that it feels bad that we can't make it immediately better for them.

Glad for the family visit and nice to know about Gwen loving books and the food she was introduced to.

Re: your question on my post, I wake her up at 5:30ish in the evening, so that we can go out and take a walk. If she sleeps more, it pushes her nighttime sleeping.

Luckily she's definitely on the mend, feeling the best of the three of us! (Why is it that when a baby wakes up 2-3 times during the night, she can still be happy and rested in the morning, whereas it just destroys us adults? :))
