...will I ever get tired of cuddling her close? Will there ever not be room on my lap for her? Will her smile ever not cause mine to appear?

I look at her and cannot imagine a time when that won't be the case. 50 years from now, I hope I can pull her onto my lap and hug her and grin at her delight in the world. It makes me wonder how my mom would feel if I sat down on her lap for a hug the next time I see her.

Well, B is almost 20 and neither one of us is tired of cuddling yet.

Your mom would probably rather hug the baby ;) Greg still likes to climb in my lap and I still like to have him there, but I confess, when he started getting his current gangly, not really even a toddler anymore thing going on, I started feeling almost physically why some people get crazy about having grandkids.

True, that! Maybe we'll have to do a three-gen lap/hug pile. I bet Gwen and I could both fit on mom's lap.

One of my (less serious, but still not completely joking) arguments I proffered to Joel about having kids is that if we didn't have kids, we wouldn't have grandkids (not that having kids is any guarantee, but they are at least a necessary condition).

There's nothing like having a beloved child of your own to begin to understand the constant and unwavering love that follows a mother's child throughout her life.

The truth is, there will always be room for our children on our lap. Their smile will always lead us to our smile.

On that note, when do babies start sitting on their own? Seeing how comfy Gwen is, I wonder when Figlia will do it? She has been sitting supported since May, and nowadays asks to be made to stand, but is still not sitting unsupported....

Regarding your comment, how do you manage when she wakes up early?

Thank you for 'it does get better'.

Gwen's first sitting without me keeping a hand on her was on the train to Germany at the end of April, so she was just over 5.5 months. Within a week or so after that she was srong enough that I didn't feel the need to hover around her in case she toppled over and she's been going strong since; but only if I set her up. She still can't get into a sitting position from lying down yet. I'm not sure when that will happen. She only started asking to stand about a month ago, prior to that her knees would just go to jelly.

The way I manage when she wakes up early is to comfort myself that she won't be up for more than about 45m to 1h15m, and after that will go back to bed at which point I will too. Her first nap is usually around an hour, if not more, and that one more hour is enough to keep me going through the day. (Usually. Lately I've been staying up an extra hour to watch the Olympics coverage, and so I'm feeling it. On the train yesterday I fell asleep and woke up when my head jerked to the side and hit the window...)

Hmmm... Figlia still topples over and so I can't leave her unattended at all. Sometimes, when she can figure it, she rests her hands in front of her and sits, but then she goes - 'poof'. But she has been wanting to stand all of the last month. Figlia too, hasn't figured sitting on her own, getting up from the lying down position.

Figlia, once up, will not go down for atleast three hours. I am so beat, on that.
