Joel left for 10 days in the US this morning, the Olympics are on, and Raglan is coming up and we're going to be there the full 5 days. I want to be dressed befitting my station for all that time, and more and more I'm feeling the disparity between my garb and Joel's. So: this is a perfect scenario for sewing.

When we were going through stuff in storage over Christmas, I found an old cotehardie that I hadn't brought with me when we moved (don't know why; it's perfectly servicable brown cotton with nice buttons, and it fits me well), so I brought it back with. It didn't fit when I tried it on at Christmas, but at 6 weeks post-partum I wasn't too worried, and I brought it along to Winchester where it fit great...except, I noticed, it was rather short; my underdress was showing. So project number one involved refurbishing that, and I finished (at least, this part) tonight; I took some of the leftover dark maroon/purple wool from the dress that [livejournal.com profile] wortschmiedin helped me make, and cut a wide band (about 12cm) which I sewed onto the hem; I then, tonight, added some cuffs of the same fabric. It's amazing how much that spruced things up. If I still have time, I may try to add a bit of embroidery to both cuffs and hem, but I'm not going to hold my breath, as my other projects are for the most part much more ambitious. One of Joel's tunics needs some seams fixed, so that's not too hard, but he's started making noises about a name and persona and time period and culture, and what he's said is 16th C/late-period. We've looked through some books of paintings and woodcuts, and he's pointed out a few things he likes, and the base of all of them is the poofy white shirt. So I'm going to try to make him one. I took down all the measurements I need (I hope!) before he left, and will try to follow the guidelines here. I'm nervous about this from the layout/design point of view; it's simple geometry, but it's geometry, and that's my downfall. But once I've got everything cut out, it's all straight seams and should be straightforward. If it goes smoothly and I feel really ambitious, I might try to put together a doublet to go over it from some blue wool that I won in the Raglan raffle a few years ago. (Come to think of it, the fabric I'll use for the shirt I also won in that raffle). I've got some nice green linen I can use to line it. No buttons though, and I don't know where I'd go in this city to find some. Anyway, I'm not holding out much hope to have that much stamina for sewing in the next two weeks. If I do, I'm also thinking of maybe taking some more of the leftover maroon wool to make myself a little 14th C hood (maybe also lined in the green. Maybe reversible. Maybe I'm way too optimistic).
