an anniversary, of sorts
Nov. 29th, 2012 08:52 pmOne year ago we completed our move to Tilburg.
I do not recommend attempting a two hour train ride with an 18 day old baby and a cat.

It was a really good day. Gwen woke a little after 6:00, as she usually does lately, but after eating was strangely fussy and clingy. She was unhappy if I sat in the rocking chair, and unhappy if she sat on my lap in the rocking chair, but if I sat on the floor (which I did, next to the radiator), then she was content to just climb all over me, stopping regularly to sit in my lap, or to hug me, lay her head on my shoulder, and let me rub her back. I eventually pulled her quilt out of the crib and wrapped us both up in it, and it was really cozy and cuddly. She's never been like that before. Eventually she fussed enough that I put her down for her nap around 7:45 (quite early, but the second morning this week where she's napped at that time, instead of 9:00), and then went back to bed myself. She woke around 10:00, but that's when Joel woke up, so I slept until nearly 11:00! This coming after a night where I actually shut my book not long past 22:00, and she didn't require any night-wakings from either of us, so that was a good solid 11 hours of sleep I got today. I feel so much more human.
Last year for Christmas, the University gave all its employees a 20EUR certificate for one of the two restaurants/bars on campus. Mine has been sitting on my desk since then, and I decided we really needed to use it up before I leave at the end of Dec. So Joel picked Gwen up from daycare and met me at the office, and we went to the Esplanade for supper. Their food is nothing special, but they have a decent selection of beers (I got something I'd never had before, and it was quite pleasant), and Gwen was happy to walk around while we waited for our food, and then sat on my lap and fed herself from my bowl (rice with vegetables and chicken. They said it was Japanese; I doubt it) while we ate. All told, we paid 5EUR for dinner and drinks, not a bad way to spend the night. We got home later than I'd planned, and quite a bit later than was probably best for her, given that her afternoon nap lasted all of 10 minutes (ugh!), so she was wailing pretty unhappily by the time we got home, but a belly full of warm milk flipped the switch and now she's sleeping peacefully.
A very good day.

Date: 2012-11-30 08:47 pm (UTC)Earlier, depends on the kid. One of mine was a clinger, and so would be easily held and cuddled. The other would hold on *just* enough to ensure she wasn't going to fall, but otherwise would push back to look around at other more interesting things, even when sleepy.
