Since I started my scribal blog, I haven't posted about my C&I here much. However, I spent the last two months working on a single scroll, which I completed on New Year's Day and which was given out at coronation this weekend, and I'm so very pleased and proud of it that it's worth posting here:

Very, very impressive. I know from experience just how long it takes to paint all those little diamond shapes. Interesting that the gilded leaves seem to come in groupings, unless that's an effect of not seeing the shine in all places. Normally I've seen them spaced more evenly, but the exemplar does seem to have the same arrangement.

I don't think there's an issue with the space occupied by the text; it's within normal variations, leaving some room for signatures.

What size did you use for the gilding?

Yes, the little diamonds took ages!

I used Cornelissen's water gold size, at Ari's recommendation. I like it a lot!

If it's the same one I have, I find I get a smoother ground and better raised effect with two coats of size. Looks like you've gotten over your fear of raised gold :) I'm impressed by how evenly the gold went down on the initial.

I had intended to do two coats of the size, after my last calamitous experience with gilding, but when it took me three hours one night to put down the first coat, I realized I didn't have time to do another one. I did the initial in sections, with a lot of overlap, and that helped tremendously.

WOW. As a non-member-of-the-community, I have little of value to say, but I had to say something because it is SO LOVELY. And impressive. --Bunny

It's always nice to hear that these things are pretty to non-medievalists too. :)
