not how I planned to spend the afternoon

I swear, I'm not going to let Joel travel any more.
When he was in the US in January, Gwen got sick and it looked for awhile that she wouldn't be able to go to nursery on Thursday, when I lectured in the afternoon. Luckily, I was able to arrange back-up, and it turned out she was well enough to go. In early March, he went to London one Friday, and Thursday Gwen was sent home from nursery with diarrhea, meaning she couldn't go back for 24 hours. Luckily, Friday afternoons I just have a tutorial, so I brought her along for that and everyone was amused.
He left for London again this morning, for an afternoon presentation and he'll spend the night and come back tomorrow. So of course, I got a call from nursery shortly after lunch. Gwen had made a balance beam and while walking on it, fell off and rolled over her ankle. It was bruised and she was refusing to walk on it when they called me saying I should probably come and get her and take her to A&E (accidents and emergency = urgent care/ER in US speak). Very kindly, the deputy director, who called me, also offered to drive us out there so we didn't have to worry about trying to get a taxi or taking the bus.
Gwen got her ankle x-rayed, and it turns out there's a small fracture in the fibula, and possibly in the epiphyseal plate. She got her leg all wrapped up with bandages and we have an appointment to go back tomorrow to see an orthopedic dr.
It was about 15:00 when we were ready to head home, and that's a horrible time to get a taxi; the first number I called was busy, the next went to an answering machine, and the third said there'd be a 25 min. wait. But there was a bus stop half a block down, and I figured I could carry her that far. (I could). We waited only a few minutes when the bus that comes directly to our street came...and I found that I had NO cash, and not enough change. So....
So I IMed the three people in Durham I know that own cars to see if any of them were doing nothing more than sitting at home twiddling their thumbs, and while waiting to see if they were, I started the hike down to the train station, carrying Gwen, where I knew there was both an ATM and a taxi queue. The station is a mile a way -- so, 20 min. for a healthy adult. More like 40 min. if you're carrying a 3 year old! And when we got there, there were no taxis in the queue, and three people waiting ahead of us. I was happy to sit and wait -- Gwen was in remarkably good spirits, and I was happy to not to be carrying her. But when a taxi showed up, all three of them graciously insisted we queue jump.
It was 16:30 or so by the time we got home, and since then we've been settled on the couch with videos (Gwen), beer (me), and despite the fact we do have left overs in the fridge, I decided that this was a day that called for pizza delivery if anything did. We've queued up "Sleeping Beauty" and will spend the rest of the evening companionably on the couch until bed time.

Date: 2015-07-16 07:15 pm (UTC)Isn't it also a bitter-sweet reminder how much our girls are growing up!? These days I don't refuse any requests of being carried (which are rare, but occasionally happen) because I know those days are numbered! sigh...

I hope Gwen heals well, and quickly and painlessly. And you catch some respite.
