When I was younger, not only did I collect My Little Ponies, but I also saved and collected the pictures of them on cardboard packaging. Some I cut out in a ragged polygon, including the printed name of the horse, but others, I cut out exactly around the edge of the picture, and, knowing that by doing so, I would be cutting away the name, on those, I carefully wrote the name on the back. I had quite the collection of them, and not only individual horses, but a few of the images of horses dressed up in costumes (the bride, the clown, the exercise outfit, the bunny rabbit) -- these, however, did not generally have the names of the horses pictured in the costumes printed next to them, and thus did not have the names of the horses written on the backs.

My mom, being the awesome and far-sighted mom that she is, saved these after I grew up and moved out (she also saved the actual ponies, though mine and my sister's have gotten mixed up, and so her kids have some of mine, I think, and Gwen has inherited one of hers), and brought them with to give to Gwen when she visited in April.

Gwen's primary method of playing with them is to hold one up and ask me what it's name is, making me incredibly thankful for my careful note-taking practices of my childhood. Yesterday, she took this a step further, and spent a good portion of the day lying on her stomach on the livingroom floor, asking me to name a horse and then spell the name out for her to write -- and later, she started figuring them out herself, by looking at the name as printed on the front (i.e., correlating lower case and upper case letters, since the latter are still all that she writes) or puzzling out my not-especially-good hand-writing on the back.

A few of them, though, had no name, and she decided to fix this, and to name them herself. After selecting a name, I then wrote them on the back for her, just like the others.

So now, our joint My Little Pony (Cardboard Edition) collection contains such onomastic gems as:

- Blonde Horsey
- Dot Horsey
- Horsey Tail
- Flower
- Bunny Rabbit
- Horsey Mask
- Bird Perch

The last one? It slays me.

"Bird Perch" is an awesome name. Granted, it could also be applied to a hippopotamus.

Ooh, if I tell her that, she'll think it's even neater.
