I love seeing myself through Gwen's eyes. Sometimes, it's literal, in the pictures she draws of me. Sometimes, it's more ephemeral. The other day we were watching athletics on my computer, and I got caught up in a race and the person I was rooting for didn't win, and I guess my disappointment showed on my face, because Gwen looked at me, and said in a very concerned voice, "Mummy, where's your happy face?" My "happy face" is something she's brought into conversation a couple of times recently, mostly when it's not in evidence, and usually in a tone of voice that indicates how strange she finds it when it's gone. And sometimes, it's a matter of comparison. Today at nursery she made herself a collection of computers, each with different things drawn on the screen, and she eagerly showed me one of them when I picked her up. It had a family portrait on it. From left to right: Gwen, me, Joel.

Look, I have my happy face on! (And, again, you can tell the one in the center is me, due to the hair).

I LOVE this. Poor Joel, small, off in the background, no hair, no arms, his mouth barely visible so you can't tell if he's smiling or not...Guess I know the relative importance of her parents in her life!
